refresh_01_optin_croppedHow long has it been since you spent some quality time updating your email template design? Is the spark beginning to fade a little? Even if you’re not ready for a complete redesign there are ways you can spice it up so that your readers eyes don’t begin to wander or glaze over.

Here are 5 ways to keep the magic alive by updating the design of your email template.

1. Try Some New Header Styles

Your header is like the frame for the face of your email. It’s the first thing people see. Keep it interesting by changing the look of it once in a while.

If you regularly send out emails on various subjects that can be categorized easily (ie, “News”, “Special Offers”, “Tips”, etc.) then try creating different titles or logos that can be used in the header to differentiate your emails. This can also be done with different photos/graphics or create a different color scheme for each subject.

2. Dress Up Your Copy

If your emails are generally text-heavy, then try inserting a photo into the body copy to help dress up the email and accentuate the message. You’ll want to set up some rules for how you use images though so that your emails retain a consistency. Decide on things like:

  • Whether or not to use borders
  • Maximum height and widths
  • Standard placement within your message (and always think about the space that lives between your images and the text)

3. Cook up some different colors

Depending on the design and structure of your email, changing out colors can be as simple as changing a header graphic, some text colors and/or a background color. Create a set of templates based on different color palettes that you can use interchangeably. You’ll want to make sure the colors you choose fit within the family of your brand palette and you might want to put some thought into when it might be best to use certain colors over others.

4. Take Your Readers Somewhere Special

It may not be necessary to link to every section of your website in every email. Try customizing your navigation so that they only show links that are relevant to the content of that particular email. If your email template doesn’t use a standard navigation, use custom call-to-actions.
